EN: One of the places that I have had the opportunity of discovering in the past and to which I return with the same enthusiasm every time is the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, bathed by the waters of the English Channel, where we can closely observe the bustle of local fishermen's lives according to the variation of the tides that gave way, centuries ago, to a traditional and centennial low tide fishing method. The tides dictate these people's lifestyle, both the fishing and the tourist activity, and contacting their work is another way of discovering one of France's most exciting regions.
The bay of Mont Saint-Michel is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world, and in 1979 the bay and Mont Saint-Michel became part of UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. Located between Brittany and the peninsula Cotetin in Normandy, one of the access points for its discovery is the coastal town of Cherrueix. From here on, you can join a two-hour tour in what is known as "Le Train Marin", which moves away from the coast 5 km to the open sea. The ride takes place in a tractor, similar to the ones used in fish transport, with two trailers carrying up to 40 people.
This tour begins when the tide falls and stops near the wooden stake structures raised by fishermen to collect their catch. Sometimes we can observe the tractors waiting for the tide to fall a little further to make their way toward the traps. The lively tour guide shows how fishers work and explains the types of fish captured in this region, answering every question or comment that might pop up.
This tour, which is nowadays led by a guide, can also be carried out on foot, as I have in previous years. Still, specific safety measures must be observed because of the tides and the soil's instability, which may form quicksand in certain areas. Therefore, you should follow the fishermen closely since they, better than anyone, know how to make this pedestrian route safely.

PT: Um dos lugares que tive oportunidade de descobrir no passado e a que regresso sempre com muito gosto é a baía do Monte Saint-Michel, banhada pelas águas do Canal da Mancha, onde podemos conhecer de perto a azáfama da vida dos pescadores, de acordo com o vai e vem das marés, que criou, há séculos, um modo de apanhar o pescado em maré baixa muito tradicional. De facto, as marés condicionam o modo de vida destas gentes, quer na sua actividade piscatória quer turística, e contactar de perto com o seu modo de trabalhar é uma outra forma de descobrir uma das regiões mais interessantes da França.
A baía do Monte Saint-Michel é considerada uma das baías mais belas do mundo e em 1979 foi inscrita, juntamente com o Mont Saint-Michel, na lista de património mundial da Unesco. Localiza-se entre a Bretanha a península normanda de Cotentin e um dos pontos para a sua descoberta pode ser a pequena povoação costeira de Cherrueix. A partir daqui é possível fazer uma visita guiada, de duas horas, no chamado “Le Train Marin”, que se afasta da costa e avança para o mar cerca de 5 km. Trata-se, na verdade, de um tractor, semelhante aos que são utilizados nesta região para transportar o pescado, ao qual foram anexados dois atrelados com capacidade para cerca de 40 pessoas, no total.
Esta visita comentada inicia-se com a maré a descer e vai parando em locais junto às construções em estacas que os pescadores colocam para a recolha do pescado. Por vezes vemos os tractores parados à espera de que a maré desça mais um pouco para continuarem o seu percurso em direcção às armadilhas. O animado guia demonstra como trabalham os pescadores e dá explicações detalhadas sobre o tipo de pescado que é capturado nesta região, atendendo às muitas questões e comentários que vão surgindo.
A visita que agora se faz com guia também pode ser realizada a pé, como eu fiz em anos anteriores, embora devam ser tomadas medidas de precaução por causa das marés e da instabilidade do solo que, nalguns pontos, pode ser formado por areias movediças. Aconselha-se, por isso, que acompanhem de perto os pescadores que também se desloquem a pé, pois eles, melhor do que ninguém, ajudam a fazer este percurso pedestre em segurança.
As fotografias que publicamos são sobretudo fragmentos das construções colocadas pelos pescadores da povoação de Cherrueix.
